For these reasons, it is said that 2021 will take 19 milliseconds shorter in total. In other words, days this year may last 0.5 seconds less than 24 hours on average. Experts are now discussing whether to make a taper to close this gap.
Senior researcher Peter Whibberley from the National Physical Laboratory said:
It is certainly true that the world is now spinning faster than any other moment in the last 50 years. If the speed of Earth’s rotation increases further, it is quite possible that we will need the ‘negative leap second’ application. However, it is too early to tell if this will happen.
