The research team, led by botanist Thomas Abeli of Rome Tre University in Italy, pursued the true status of 36 plant species that are native to Europe and allegedly disappeared from the earth.
Researchers who want to reveal whether these plant species are really extinct or not; It checked seed banks, botanical gardens and public data pools such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).
As a result, it was discovered that 17 plants on the list still survive.
Among the plants in question, examples of which are currently found in the botanical gardens of Utrecht University in the Netherlands, and their Latin name Armeria arcuate A plant species native to Portugal was included.
Another species that does not seem to be extinct is a plant native to the Shetland Islands in Scotland. Hieracium hethlandiae happened. This plant is now grown by the Shetland Amenity Trust, a nonprofit conservation organization in the UK.
On the other hand, the fact that the plants in question are not extinct does not mean that they are safe yet.
“The realization that these plants are not extinct is great news,” said Rafaël Govaerts, a botanist at the Royal Botanic Gardens in the UK. But they are still in critical danger, ”he said.
Speaking to The Scientist and evaluating the study as an outside eye, Govaerts said that the lists of the species that are reported to be extinct are not fixed:
Extinct means “We haven’t seen it for a hundred years.” But you turn another corner and these species suddenly appear.
