Laser Scanning Reveals 60,000 Ancient Mayan Structures Including Hidden Cities

The ancient Mayan civilization remains a mystery even after centuries of excavation and research.

Artifacts buried in lush forests are still hard to come across, as it is the best kept secret of the Central American forests.

But thanks to technological advances, a group of scientists were able to map the area and identify more than 60,000 lost Mayan structures.

The technology, which is laser-based, is called LiDAR (Light Sensing and Gap), and scientists used an airplane to scan the roughly 2100 square km of forest in Guatemala.

This massive action was organized by a nonprofit organization called PACUNAM, and with the help of LiDAR, scientists gained access to what lies beneath the trees and explored hidden Mayan cities and settlements.

It is estimated that the giant city may have more than 20 million inhabitants, this number was previously estimated at only 1 or 2 million.

With this increase in number, the Mayan civilization would be as large as Egypt or the Chinese. And since this is only the first attempt to uncover what lies in the deep forests of Guatemala, more similar cities are waiting to be discovered by this great new technology that is not yet fully utilized.

Some of the Ancient Maya’s Facial Expressions were Universal

By looking at depictions made by ancient yeasts, the researchers found evidence that some human facial expressions were universal across cultures.

Alan Cowen and Dacher Keltner in the article published in Science Advances; It describes the online work done by the participants by tagging the faces shown.

Social scientists have been arguing about the universality of human facial expressions for decades. Some suggest that many human facial expressions are common to all human cultures and therefore have a genetic component. Others disagree and suggest that most, if not all, facial expressions are by culture.

The main difficulty in resolving this controversy was finding a way to kontrol it properly. Many studies involve people from various cultures looking at pictures of people from different cultures to see if they identify the same expressions. But such studies have been tainted by the presence of researchers, either by offering first-hand examples of such faces or by arbitrarily distorting answers by offering rewards for what they wanted to find….
