On the cover of Der Spiegel’s first issue in the new year, two scientists who developed vaccines against coronavirus, BioNTech managers Dr. Hasret Türeci and Prof. Dr. He gave a place to Uğur Şahin.

Der Spiegel magazine dedicated its cover to two important scientists who left their mark on 2020 in the first issue of 2021: BioNTech executives Dr. Hasret Türeci and Prof. Dr. To Uğur Şahin. Uğur Şahin, the founder and chairman of the board of directors of the German biotechnology company BioNTech, stated that they are in an intense effort to increase the production capacity of the vaccine they developed against coronavirus. In an interview he gave to Spiegel magazine with his wife Hasret Türeci, Şahin said, “The situation does not look like a pink at the moment, since there is no other approved vaccine, it özgü started to open and we have to close this gap with our own vaccine”.

Stating that the lack of vaccine in Europe is related to the purchasing policy of the European Union (EU), Şahin said, “It özgü been set out that many different companies will produce sufficient number of vaccines. I think it was like ‘we’ll provide enough vaccines, the situation doesn’t get too bad and everything is under our control’. This surprised me, ”he said. On the other hand, Şahin emphasized that they will be able to see their production capacity more clearly at the end of January, but they will produce enough vaccines for Germany and there will be no problems here.

According to DW Turkish, Hasret Türeci, who is the director of medical matters (CMO) on BioNTech’s board of directors, said in the interview that the idea of the EU and some national governments to obtain the vaccine from different companies is inherently logical, but it is understood that “ after a point, many companies cannot deliver on time and “It is too late to close that gap with the product of another firm.”

According to the information quoted by Spiegel, the United States of America (USA) ordered 600 million doses of vaccine to BioNTech just last July. The EU, on the other hand, placed an order of 300 million only in November. Şahin said that the process in Europe did not work as rapidly and directly as it did in other countries.

Stating that it is not very simple to increase vaccine production in the short term, Şahin said, “There are no specialized, unused factories around the world that can produce the vaccine at the required quality from today to tomorrow. In drug production, you cannot switch from Aspirin or cough syrup to vaccine production at once. This process requires years of specialization and the necessary construction and technology equipment, ”he said. Hasret Türeci stated that BioNTech agreed to support vaccine production with five manufacturers in Europe.
