Historical

After the Second World War, Germany was divided into occupation zones established and controlled by the Allies. On May 23, 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany was established by merging the French, British and American occupation zones. On October 7, 1949, the German Democratic Republic, also known as East Germany, was established under Soviet occupation. On 3 October 1990, these two states merged to form the current Federal Republic of Germany.

Germany is located in central Europe, bordered by Denmark in the north, Poland and the Czech Republic in the east, Austria and Switzerland in the south, Varansa and Luxembourg and Belgium and the Netherlands in the west.

The highest point in the country is the Zugspitze in the Alps in the south. (2.962 meters). The Baltic and North Sea coasts are located in the north. The central part of the country is forest and the north is plain. The Rhine, Danube and Elbe River are the largest rivers in the country. There are natural resources in Germany such as iron, coal, potassium, uranium, copper, natural gas and nickel.

The climate is temperate throughout Germany. The climate is also affected by humid westerly winds and warm North Atlantic currents. It receives abundant rainfall every season. Winters are very cold and summers are not too hot. The most common features of continental climate are observed in the eastern regions.

Economy

Germany has a skilled workforce, strong capital structure and a social market economy with a low corruption rate. It has the largest and strongest economy in Europe. The United States is the fourth largest economy in the world after China and Japan. The services sector represents 71 percent of GDP, industry 28 percent and agriculture 1 percent. The unemployment rate is around 5 percent. It is one of the most fertile countries in the world. Monetary policy is managed by the European Central Bank, headquartered in Frankfurt. Leading industrial areas are automobile, pharmaceutical, chemical, information and communication technology, steel, energy and construction.

Demography

Germany has a population of more than 80 million and is the second most populous country in Europe after Russia. Immigrants make up about 7.7 percent of the population. The official language of the country is German, Turkish, Kurdish, Polish and Russian. 67% of the country’s population can speak a foreign language.

The most common religion in the country is Christianity with 66.8 percent. (30.8% Catholics, 30% Protestants) 32-35% of the population stated that they do not believe in a religion. Islam is the second largest religion in the country. In the 2011 census, it was stated that 1.9% of its population is Muslim.
