Historical

After the Second World War, Germany was divided into occupation zones established and controlled by the Allies. On May 23, 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany was established by merging the French, British and American occupation zones. On October 7, 1949, the German Democratic Republic, also known as East Germany, was established under Soviet occupation. On 3 October 1990, these two states merged to form the current Federal Republic of Germany.

The unemployment rate is around 5 percent. It is one of the most fertile countries in the world. Monetary policy is managed by the European Central Bank, headquartered in Frankfurt. Leading industrial areas are automobile, pharmaceutical, chemical, information and communication technology, steel, energy and construction.

Demography

Germany has a population of more than 80 million and is the second most populous country in Europe after Russia. Immigrants make up about 7.7 percent of the population. The official language of the country is German, Turkish, Kurdish, Polish and Russian. 67% of the country’s population can speak a foreign language.

The most common religion in the country is Christianity with 66.8 percent. (30.8% Catholics, 30% Protestants) 32-35% of the population stated that they do not believe in a religion.
