Earth’s Infancy Oceans of Magma Detected in Greenland

Earth’s Infancy Oceans of Magma Detected in Greenland

The world özgü not always been an oasis of blue and green life. In the first 50 million years of our planet, about 4.5 billion years ago, its surface was a hell of magma oceans that were bubbling and erupting with the heat from the Earth’s interior.

Billions of years ago, parts of Greenland were a melted sea, in sharp contrast to the pale blue ice seen here today. Researchers have now found the isotope signatures of these exploding, primitive Earth’s in basalt rocks near Nuuk.

It is generally accepted that the Earth had a large ocean of magma in its early history; It is a common step in the early evolution of planets. But thanks to the planet’s tectonics, little evidence remained of what this version of Earth looked like.

The research, published in the journal Science Advances on Friday, explains the 3.7 billion-year-old rock isotope signatures of iron and tungsten, indicative of the elements of Earth’s mantle in the first half-billion years of our planet’s formation.

“The question that motivated me was this: If we think the magma ocean scene is important for Earth’s history, why is there no geological evidence for it? What if we really try to go after him directly? ”

The world is constantly cleaning tectonic slate with its geological activity; The site in Greenland is the first to show off such a huge, fiery sea. In fact, the research site on Isua is the same protrusion that caused a buzz a few years ago when bacterial fossils, the oldest known life on Earth, called possible stromatolites, were discovered. (In fact, it is easier to find information about the magma ocean by looking at the Moon.) When the magma ocean finally cooled, some of its deeper components crystallized at very high pressures. The ocean of magma is 650 km below the Earth’s surface, Williams said.

So how do you hunt an ancient magma ocean that özgü already solidified and cooled? You should find geochemical signatures that show the conditions in which they occurred.

Williams said there was a positive correlation between the isotopes they detected and an indicator of high pressure conditions, which gave “quite a bit of confidence” in the team’s results.

Much more work will be needed to find other geographic signatures that show what the early magma state looked like oceanic or otherwise. Due to the natural tendency of Earth to clear its history, through massive amounts of tectonic changes, we do not know the exact time frame of the theoretical magma ocean or how much of the planet will be covered.
