Earthquake in Bolivia Reveals Subterranean Ranges

Data collected from the 8.2-magnitude earthquake in Bolivia years ago revealed the presence of mountain ranges deep within the continent.
We can find similar geographical structures on the earth’s surface under the earth’s crust. There are rivers flowing underground, volcanoes erupting. The mountain ranges joined the structures we found under the crust of the world.

The magnitude of the earthquake in Bolivia on June 9, 1994 was measured as 8.2. The breaking point of the earthquake in South America was 650 kilometers below the surface. The shaking was so strong that the shock wave reached Canada.

“Earthquakes this big don’t happen often,” said geologist Jessica Irving. says.
As a result of an earthquake of this magnitude and depth, not only the crust of the earth trembles like a crab. Thanks to the seismic waves that emerge, we can observe the depths of the earth as if we can see the internal organs of a living thing that özgü undergone an ultrasound.

Thanks to the Bolivia earthquake, which was one of the first major earthquakes recorded with çağdaş technology, the geographical forms under the continent also emerged. In collaboration with Princeton University in the USA and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the data collected during the earthquake were brought together to reveal the structure of the underground.

Geoscientists have recently begun to decompose the layers of the earth. In this area, the earthquake in 1994 was also an important source of data.

Seismic movement differences in layers are caused by minerals and mines under the earth’s crust. Mountain ranges and underground mountains divide the crust layers according to the results. These structures also reveal what happened to the old tectonic plates and surfaces. Thus, the accuracy of the past theories of the earth’s surface that emerged in the past can be checked.

The deepest pit we have dug as a human race so far is 12 km in diameter. Therefore, it is not possible for us to go and see this region for now. Still, we have ways to understand what is under the surface.

The research was published in the journal Science.
