Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Ratio Increased by 43 Percent in the Last 141 Years

In the last 141 years, the rate of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased by 43 percent. Human activities, excessive use of fossil fuels, increase in production and consumption continue to increase the rate of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Although the decrease in activity from time to time during the pandemic period partially reduced the rate of carbon dioxide, it could not prevent the rate increase.

According to the information compiled from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) data, the rate of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere was around 200 to 280 ppm (one part per million) in the last 400 thousand years before the industrialization period.

While the carbon dioxide values, one of the main gases that cause greenhouse effect, were approximately 291 ppm in 1880, this value increased by 43 percent to 415 ppm in 2020.

‘The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere continues to increase as a result of human activities’

Evaluating the increase in the carbon dioxide ratio, Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Meteorology Engineering Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Toros said that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere continues to increase.

Stating that the rate of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased rapidly with the industrialization after 1880, Toros said, “This rate will continue to increase more and more over the years. We are currently in January and experiencing the spring weather. “Temperature and carbon dioxide ratio are increasing at the same time.”

Stating that the main factor in the increase in the rate of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is human activities, Toros continued: “As the years progressed, we increased the use of fossil fuels and reduced forests. This increases carbon emissions. The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere continues to increase as a result of human activities. The rate of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased by 43 percent in 141 years after 1880, reaching a value of 415 ppm. Therefore, as all humanity, we must take precautions and try to reduce carbon emissions from this day. We need to reduce the waste of resources with excessive consumption and production, and use renewable energy resources in energy. This will prevent the increase in carbon dioxide. ”

‘The coronavirus outbreak could not stop the increase in carbon dioxide rate’

Explaining that the effectiveness of people decreased a little after the coronavirus epidemic occurred, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Toros said, “When the epidemic measures taken reduced the effectiveness of people, the emission of greenhouse gas to the atmosphere decreased slightly, but the coronavirus epidemic could not stop the increase in the rate of carbon dioxide. “As humans, we still continue to pollute the atmosphere,” he said.
