Woolly Mammoths Would Live For 4 Thousand Years Without People

(4)

Without humans, woolly mammoths would have lived another 4,000 years. An international team of researchers used computer simulations to demonstrate climate change and the role of human predators in the extinction of feathered mammoths.

The article, which özgü not yet passed the referee approval and özgü been made available on the website bioRxiv, suggested that if there were no human hunters, mammoths would have survived for another 4,000 years.

Scientists have been debating the reason for the extinction of the woolly mammoth for years. Some argue that climate change is wiping out mammoths as the planet warmed after the last ice age about 15,000 years ago. A team from the Max Planck Society of Institutes recently concluded that climate change is driving the mammoths in North America to extinction. On the other hand, some think the reason is human hunters. Some people think that two reasons are probably effective.

Previous research özgü shown that as the planet warms after the last ice age, woolly mammoths, which feed on meadows that grow in cold climates, began to migrate north. Earlier studies revealed that the majority of this species died around 11,000 years ago, and only small groups survived for a few thousand more years in some isolated areas. These last survivors are thought to have become extinct about 4 thousand years ago.

In other words, in the study, the researchers visualized the woolly mammoth populations between about 21,000 years ago and 4,000 years before the last mammoth died. Wanting to reproduce the conditions mammoths encountered, the researchers added climate data and human hunting data at that time. The team repeated the simulations more than 90,000 times, making minor changes in factors that could result in extinction.

The most likely scenario that emerged from the study was that climate change pushed mammoths into more restricted environments and the predators extinct these animals.

The simulations also showed that some mammoth populations remained in areas that humans had not yet discovered at that time for longer than thought. The researchers then eliminated the predator human factor and discovered that most mammoths survived for another four thousand years.
