With This Device, Your Sweat Becomes a Power Supply to Your Electronic Devices

According to its developers, a new superabsorbent film can be used to power wearable electronic devices such as smart watches, to convert sweat into electricity.

Singapore Researchers from the National University (NUS) have created the new film that can evaporate sweat from the skin to keep people cool while exercising.

The team says the film, which can be incorporated into fabrics or used as a new insole, can also power electronic devices by converting moisture into energy.

To do this job, they developed a new eight-cell wearable energy harvesting device. Each can generate about half a volt of energy after absorbing moisture.

This is currently enough to power an LED bulb; However, the technology is only in the concept stage, and the team believes that when fully developed, the use of this power can be extended to athletes, watches or other future wearable technologies.

The new film was published in the magazine Nano Energy, and early experiments included a patch that could absorb underarm sweat and prevent it from reaching clothes.

“When water evaporates from the skin surface, we lower the skin temperature and feel cooler,” said team leader Tan Swee Ching.

“In our new invention, we created a new film that is extremely effective at evaporating the sweat from our skin and then absorbing moisture from it.”

The team explained that the main components of the new thin film are two hygroscopic chemicals, cobalt chloride and ethanolamine.

Besides being extremely moisture absorbent, this film can quickly release water when exposed to sunlight. It is also ‘renewable’ and can be reused more than 100 times.

Conventional materials have low water uptake and bulk solid structures, making them absorb moisture from sweat evaporation. makes it inappropriate.

In contrast, the new moisture-absorbing film developed by NUS absorbs 15 times more moisture and does this six times faster than conventional materials.

Additionally, this innovative film shows a color change from blue to purple and finally pink when it absorbs moisture.

This feature can be used as an indicator of the degree of moisture absorption.

The NUS team packaged the film into breathable and waterproof membranes that are flexible and widely used in clothing.

They then successfully demonstrated the application of moisture absorbent film for underarm pads, insole and shoe insoles.

“Underarm sweating is embarrassing and annoying, and this contributes to the growth of bacteria and leads to unpleasant body odor,” Tan said.

Sweat build-up in shoes can lead to health problems such as blisters, calluses and fungal infections.

‘By using the underarm pad, insole and insole embedded with moisture absorbing film, moisture from sweat evaporation is quickly absorbed, which prevents sweat build-up and provides a dry and cold microclimate for comfort.’

The NUS team now hopes to work with companies to incorporate the new moisture absorbent film into consumer products.
