Retinal Stem Cells Taken From Human Cadavers Can Relieve Blindness

Retina collected from the eyes of corpses, one study of stem cells suggested that it could be used to treat the blindness of millions of people around the world.

Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a layer of cells that carry nutrients and waste products into and out of the retina, the strip of tissue behind our eyes.

These pigmented cells also help absorb diffused light in the eye and are essential for düzgüsel vision. RPE dysfunction is the leading cause of blindness.

One type of RPE dysfunction, affecting nearly 200 million people worldwide is macular degeneration .

Leading experts from China successfully transplanted retinal stem cells from a human cadaver into the eyes of monkeys. Stem cells survived here and turned into RPE.

The transplanted cells managed to alter the function of the host’s RPE. This increased the likelihood of correcting RPE dysfunction in humans in the future.

“We have shown that RPE derived from a cadaver donor at least partially replaces the function in the eye center of a non-human primate,” said Timothy Blenkinsop, a columnist and cell biologist from the Icahn School of Medicine, Israel’s Mount Sinai.

‘Cells derived from a human cadaver donor can be safely transplanted underneath the retina and replace host function and thus be a promising resource for saving vision in patients with retinal disease.’

In the study, stem cells from the eyes of donated corpses were transplanted under the eye center of monkeys, the central part of the retina.

The researchers reported that the transplanted patches remained stable for at least three months without any serious side effects.

“Moreover, the stem cell-derived RPE partially took over the function of the monkey RPE and was able to support düzgüsel photoreceptor function,” said Professor Blenkinsop.

“Importantly, these cells didn’t cause retinal scarring.”

The team said stem cells harvested from dead donors could serve as the ‘unlimited source’ of human RPE and regain the sight of millions of people around the world.

‘Transplantation of RPE stem cells derived from human adult cadaver eyes to replace defective RPE is a possible treatment for degeneration in the eye center,’ said Professor Blenkinsop.

The team cautioned that more research would be needed to determine if the procedure worked for humans. Clinical trials seem far away for now.

However, they added, the first step in this direction would be to kontrol stem cells in monkeys suffering from blindness due to RPE dysfunction.

“The results of this study show that human adult donor RPE is safe for transplantation and strengthens the human clinical trials argument for the treatment of retinal disease,” said Professor Blenkinsop.

‘However, additional research on this approach is needed,’ he added.

‘Future studies should investigate whether RPE stem cells derived from cadaver adult eyes can restore vision in human patients and in diseased non-human primate models.’
