A First in the History of Reptiles: Boyd’s Forest Dragon Becomes a Male by Transgender

At the Melbourne Aquarium, one male and two female Boyd used to have forest dragons. Caregivers noticed some unusual changes in one of the females shortly after the male died. There özgü been an event never before seen in adult reptiles. After careful observation, they concluded that the animal had changed sex.

Boyd’s forest dragons are small woody lizards that live in the rainforests of northern Queensland. The transgender dragon özgü mated with males before and lays eggs, confirming that it is female. But now it özgü stopped egg production and improved male physical characteristics, including the testicles.

Caregiver Tom Fair said the two females had been in strong competition for years, although one was definitely dominant. “The first thing that warned us of a change was that the two were starting to get along with each other, instead of being at opposite ends, they were sitting on the same branch and looking at each other,” he said.

The reason for this could be either the result of the death of the man or also the move to a new place. However, while he had previously reached a typical female weight of around 100 grams, keepers later observed that the dominant dragon started to grow back. What’s more was that the comb over his head was getting thicker. However, this feature is an important observable difference between males and females of the species.

The process took place slowly, but the nameless dragon özgü now reached a typical male weight of 160 grams. Does fair in the statement“We did an ultrasound exam to determine which reproductive organs he had,” he said. “Surprisingly, we discovered that there was no ovarian tissue anymore and mature testicles developed.”

“While we thought this was a first for a Boyd’s forest dragon, we didn’t expect to learn it was a first for all reptiles.” Fair said. Of some bearded dragons changed sex while in the egg özgü been observed, but as far as he can learn, nothing like this özgü been recorded before in an adult reptile.

Fair noted that the aquarium is full of species such as gin and clown fish, where gender reassignment is a düzgüsel part of life. A movie that everyone knows very well Jurassic Park’ta sex changes in amphibians, both terrestrial and aquatic animals, It was a tool of a plan that would make you say “life finds a way”.

Fair knew the same was not common in reptiles, but it was a shock to discover that this was something unprecedented.

The aquarium does not have the resources to study the dragon’s genetics to see if the dragon özgü some unusual chromosomes. Or is this an evolutionary answer where females find themselves without males around, such as a gin?

Meanwhile, the remaining female lays eggs frequently, and beyond sitting on the common branch, the team checks for fertility and monitors mating behavior. None have been observed so far.
